We are pleased to share an update from our latest fieldwork campaign in the central Adriatic Sea, where our team successfully carried out a series of Ocean-Bottom Seismometer (OBS) recovery and redeployment operations across three key locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OBS instruments are autonomous underwater devices designed to record seismic and acoustic signals directly from the seafloor. Each unit houses a seismometer, a hydrophone, a data logger, and a battery pack \u2014 all sealed within a pressure-resistant housing capable of withstanding the depths of the open sea. Once their recording period is complete, the instruments are recalled to the surface via an acoustic release signal sent from the vessel, after which the data can be retrieved and processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, seven OBS units have now been brought back on board, and initial data checks confirm that all instruments recorded throughout their deployment without interruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this campaign, we recovered a total of seven instruments across three sites. Three OBS units were successfully retrieved from their deployment positions near the island of Cres, in the northern part of our survey area. These instruments had been recording seismic activity in that sector for the duration of the deployment period, and the data collected will contribute to our understanding of crustal structure and local seismicity in the northern Adriatic. A further three OBS devices were recovered near Jabuka Island, an isolated volcanic islet situated in the central Adriatic \u2014 a tectonically interesting area known for its seismic activity. Finally, one additional instrument was retrieved from a position near Vis Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the recoveries, we proceeded with the redeployment of three freshly prepared OBS units to continue the long-term monitoring effort in the region. One instrument was deployed at a new position near Vis Island, extending our coverage in that area. Two further OBS units were placed at selected sites adjacent to Jabuka Island, where ongoing seismic monitoring is of particular scientific interest given the island’s volcanic origin and the broader tectonic setting of the central Adriatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The redeployed instruments are now resting on the seafloor and recording continuously. We look forward to recovering them in a future campaign and analysing the data they will gather in the months ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OBS instruments were collected and re-laid by collaborators on the CROSSNET project: Valentina Ga\u0161o, Iva Kostanj\u0161ek, Viktorija Milec, Anamarija Tremljan Milun, Antonio Brckovi\u0107, Goran \u010corak, Marko Kapelj, Bruno Mravlja, Marko Pervan, together with the project leader Tomislav Fiket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
