On Saturday, May 31, 2025, we headed to the island of Vis to install 4 more Ocean Bottom Seismometer \u2013 OBS from the company K.U.M. Umwelt- und Meerestechnik Kiel GmbH<\/em>. Upon arrival on the island of Vis, we prepared, assembled and calibrated the instruments to ensure the highest possible quality data collection. One instrument was installed near the island of Vis, and three instruments were installed around the islet of Jabuka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OBS instruments were deployed by CROSSNET project associates: Viktorija Milec, Anamarija Tremljan Milun, Iva Kostanj\u0161ek, Antonio Brckovi\u0107, Marko Kapelj, Goran \u010corak and Bruno Mravlja, with the project manager Tomislav Fiket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jabuka is a volcanic island located 30 miles west of Vis. It is 97 m high has a circumference of about 700 m, and was declared a geological monument of nature in 1958. (Source<\/a>) The aforementioned area near the island of Jabuka was chosen for the installation of underwater seismic devices due to the depth of the sea, which in some parts reaches 260 meters, and the insufficient research on seismic activity in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon arrival at the deployment locations, the instruments were lifted above the sea surface by a crane and released into the sea. The depths of the instruments were checked with the P.A.C.S. deck unit, and the instruments were deployed at depths ranging from 100 to 189 m. The instruments will record data on the seabed for several months, and since direct data transfer is not possible, data processing will follow after instrument collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
