The European Plate Observing System (EPOS) is a multidisciplinary and distributed European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), whose long-term goal is to enable and advance the integrated use of data, data products and equipment serving the scientific community engaged in the study Countries in Europe. At the EPOS ERIC General Assembly held in Rome on December 6th and 7th 2023, the Republic of Croatia’s candidacy for full membership in EPOS was officially accepted. In January 2024, the European Commission accepted full membership, which brought EPOS ERIC to 19 member states, with one observer country. Broadening the geographical reach of EPOS membership is very important from a scientific point of view, as it enhances the participation of a wider range of scientific organizations. (Source)
The main objectives of EPOS are to establish a comprehensive multidisciplinary research platform for the Earth sciences in Europe in order to better understand the physical processes controlling earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, unrest episodes and tsunamis as well as those driving tectonics and Earth surface dynamics. Also, the establishment of a a long-term plan to facilitate the integrated use of data, models and facilities from existing, and new distributed research infrastructures, and ensure a common and shared data policy, open access and transparent use of data. The Republic of Croatia has already participated in the integration plan with several data sets, and now, as a full member of EPOS ERIC, it will be given access to high-quality scientific data, the establishment of national cooperation of all Earth science disciplines in Croatia, and their activities within the European scientific community.
